Sydney (as well as Brisbane) is actually a very Business like city and that Surfers Paradise is where the Japanese, New Zealanders and Australians go on holiday. It was like 45 miles of Miami Beach and Honolulu strung out together. Realizing that Australia is made up of six States and that most of the Australians don't care about how many there are and only care about their own state. When they talk about the AFL, they are NOT talking about US! But rather about footy as they call it. ("State of Origin") is like the Super Bowl competition in Australia.

Can't let this one go without a comment,
we have several codes of football here,
There is Rugby Union, which is played on a world stage by our Wallabies. There is Rugby League, which is mainly played throughout the Pacific area, the State of Origin, New South Wales VS Queensland match you mentioned is the pinacle here.
There is Soccer, which is played worldwide, our representatives here are the Socceroos and then.... There is, AFL or Australian Football League which had it's origins in Melbourne thus accounting for the slow acceptance in Sydney, (there is a fierce rivalry between these two.)
back to AFL it is now our national game having secured a substantial foothold in both NSW and Qld.
The annual grand final for AFL draws the largest crowd, for any pupose, in Melbourne each year
Thanks for the LOCAL insight here to what seems to be a VERY differnt football program than the states!
